Encouraging S.L.C. Results-Babu Ram Banjade
Since long, S.L.C. examination has been regarded as an 'Iron Gate' in Nepal. Among all the other exams in our country, S.L.C. exam is given due importance and the success is also celebrated with great pomp and happiness accordingly. Teachers, students, parents, guardians and even the media wait for its result very curiously. The eve and the day of result publication give everyone a sense of a big festival every year. This can certainly be taken in that way. Everyone became quite happy and excited when they knew this year's S.L.C. result that paved way for 68.47 % of the total candidates appearing in the exam for further studies. Thanks god, you have helped us increase the number of S.L.C. passing students making a nice history, amidst a lot of strikes and political chaos in the country. We always want this kind of result for our students, children and friends.
It is a wonder for some people as a large number of students have been successful while many things in the country are deteriorating. Though the results are very exciting and encouraging, we should be aware of the few crucial things related to this result. Despite the excellent result of many well-off schools, there are still some schools which have to experience null success. Then, where is the defect still lying? Aren’t there enough infrastructures in those schools? The concerned authorities have to seriously keep an eye on them. We can expect similar success for those schools as well if we knew the secret of 68.47% success in S.L.C. It will help those unsuccessful schools to repair the defects next year. The secret of this success will certainly encourage the unsuccessful to do better from their side and we can meet the national goal of education very soon.
There are four elements of S.L.C. examination which together contribute to the good or bad result. Though all these four elements have to function hand in hand, one or two of them must function more effectively than others for this. The two closely associated elements are the teachers and the students. Good or bad result of the students largely depends on the teaching and learning strategies set in the classroom. Then, can we ,now, say that the better result of S.L.C. examination this year is the result of the teachers' and the students' hard work?. Have we teachers really improved our teaching skills? Have we learnt to apply the modern teaching methodology effectively in our classes? Has there been a significant application of the trainings and workshops on teaching methodology? If yes, more and more teachers throughout the country should be trained and encouraged to teach better in order to achieve far better results in future.
The second and the most important element associated with the S.L.C. exam are the students themselves. No matter how hard work the teachers do, we can never expect a good result if the students deceive us by not putting sufficient efforts in studies. They are the major element who glorify their schools and give an enormous happiness to their parents and guardians. If they do not work hard, all the efforts of the teachers and their parents go in vein. In the past some years, we have been observing this result going up gaining a satisfactory height. If we observe the last five years’ S.L.C. results, 38.72% examinees had been successful in 2062.Similarly 46.51% in 2063 and 58.64 % in 2064 had achieved success in the S.L.C. examination. In 2065, 63.73% candidates passed the S.L.C. exam which increased to 68.47 % in 2066, which is definitely a milestone in the history of S.L.C. examination in Nepal. It can be assumed that the students have been more laborious and they have started being more serious about their studies. So, can we say that our students have learnt to work harder with their studies and enhanced their quality? Has the quality control of the Nepalese schools worked better this time? It may be true.
Thirdly, there are parents who invest a heavy portion of their income on the education of their children with a dream of making their children one of the best human beings in this competitive world. Can we say that the parents have also been more conscious and are paying more attention to their offsprings? It may be true because today's parents are more worried about their children's education and they may have guided them at home more than they used to do in the past. The good result can also be the result of the parents' more active role in guiding their children.
The fourth element is the Examination system. There have been some revisions in the examination system in the past some years. S.L.C. Board of Nepal has introduced a new system of conducting exams only from the course of class ten. The students obviously feel easier to prepare for their exams in this regard. Though this fact can be one of the reasons for the success in the S.L.C.exam, there can be many other reasons behind this grand success.
It is a matter of pleasure for everyone to enjoy securing distinctions and first division marks in such exam that is supposed to be the Iron Gate. But the marks scored in the exams have to be compatible to the real quality of the students. There should be quality control in the educational institutions as well as the examination board. We should focus on the quality education rather than increasing the pass percentage. It is good if the results and the quality of students match perfectly. Otherwise, such results can just be can not prove reliability of our education system. Our products should be fit for the demand of the present world. Therefore, all the elements of S.L.C. examination should co-ordinate with one another to enhance the quality of education and make New Nepal.
Now, we should be more sensitive and should put more efforts in excelling the S.L.C. results. For this, the students should not be frightened by calling S.L.C. an Iron Gate. There can be more success in this exam if they are encouraged more and made more comfortable during the preparation and the examination period. They should be well counseled during the examination and treated in a psychological way. Besides, there are many schools in the remote areas of Nepal which have chosen to teach practical subjects but have a lack of equipments and trained teachers. There should be better management of such requirements. There should be no discrimination between the children of private and public schools from the government side. It is the responsibility of the government to guarantee school education to all the children. The children of all parts of the country should be treated equally. Teaching learning activities in the public schools still need to be made more effective though many of them have already shown a good result. Teaching should be unquestionably qualitative for a good result while the examination should also be reliable. During the examination, we can still hear about indisciplinary activities in the examination centers. This discipline should be maintained by all the related persons if we really want to make the exams like S.L.C. a prestigious exam. Students are the future stars. Future world is upon the soldiers of today’s children. Therefore, all sectors of the society should co-operate them to achieve a quality in their education. Bandhs, strikes, demonstrations should not affect the school children in no way. They should be provided a conducive environment for learning and should not be prevented from getting light of education for the benefit of a certain political organization or others like them. Education should not be meant as the collection of mark sheets but should be taken as a process of acquiring life-useful knowledge and skills. Every one of us is equally responsible for producing good and smart citizens for this country. Therefore, we should work hand in hand to achieve the national goal of education.
